British Royal Naval Brigade

British Royal Naval Brigade, 15 mm Miniatures Minifigs.

Royal Naval Brigade, a detachment of British Sailors (Bluejackets), Marines and Marine Artillerymen, drawn from Royal Navy warships in the theater of operation, serving on shore. British sailors and Marine detachments were readily available as foot troops, since the Royal Navy fought only a single naval engagement between 1850 and 1914. Equipped with small arms, Gatling, Gardner or Nordenfelt guns, and naval artillery, sailors and marines accompanied the British Army on many campaigns of the 19th century. A Naval Brigade detachment was commanded by the Executive Officer (XO) of the ship, the captain of which remained on board. On submarines, frigates and smaller ships the First Lieutenant (number one) served as XO, whereas larger ships had a Commander as XO.

British sailors wore a variety of uniforms and equipment, depending on the weather conditions in the theater of operations. They were armed with small arms, machine guns, and landing guns from the ship’s inventory. From 1890 each sailor carried two brown leather ammunition bandoliers, one around the waist, the other across the left shoulder. During the Second Boer War Naval Brigade sailors wore the less conspicous khaki infantry uniform. Non-commissioned officers wore rank badges on the upper right arm: Leading Seaman (fouled anchor), Petty Officer (crown above crossed fouled anchor), and Chief Petty Officer (crown above crossed fouled anchors surrouned by a wreath). Up to three good conduct stripes (chevrons) could be worn below the rank badge, one each for four years of service.
