ROCO 1:100 Scale Vehicle Review
The ROCO model of the Panzerkampfwagen V “Panther” Ausf. G is one of the very first Minitanks that were still manufactured in 1:100 scale. It is a late Ausf. G, introduced in September 1944, with the typical chin at the bottom edge of the gun mantlet, which was designed to minimize the risk of rounds ricochetting off the mantlet and into the thinner hull top armour. At this point in the war, the Panther left the factory in its »Oxide Red« primer, which later received a »Dark Yellow 2« Verzerranstrich disruptive pattern in the field; see our tutorial: Painting the Panzer V “Panther” Ausf. Evaluation
The Pz.Kpfw. V “Panther” Ausf. G from ROCO consists of only 9 parts and is delivered fully assembled.
The cast-on detail looks mostly realistic and is easy to paint. However, the large stowage bins and the exhaust system are only modelled in relief into the rear hull armour plate; the 20 t rack jack and the Notek camouflaged rear light are missing. The vehicle rear does not look like the original at all. A mistake that is only noticeable upon closer inspection. The painted vehicle is a convincing enough model of the Pz.Kpfw. V “Panther” Ausf. G, and that is what really matters in war games.
The anti-aircraft machine gun on the turret roof is so oversized that it would be better to remove it entirely and use the weapon on another 1:87 or 1:76 scale vehicle.
