Samurai

Samurai, in Japan the military retinue of the daimyo (see above). Numbering 400,000, they formed a hereditary class and had the privilege of carrying two swords. After the Restoration, this privilege was taken away from them, and their pensions were paid off through a one-time payment; since 1878 they have been called shizoku. This Japanese knightly class also included the hatamato, the samurai of the Tokugawa shogunate. Recently, attempts have been made to establish the samurai code of honor, “Buschido” (i.e., the way of the warrior), as the national ethic of the Japanese (see Yamato damash). See Ronin.
