Evaluation

The paint set includes step-by-step painting instructions by Jaume Ortiz, eminent painter of things German.

Grünmeliert, the colour of the Fallschirmjägerbluse M40 jump smock, is strangely missing from this “Fallschirmjäger early World-War II” paint set, and we are quite dependent on the artistic prowess of Jaume Ortiz to conjure up some semblance of Green Melange from the other greens included in this paint set.

RAL 6003 Olive Green is the colour designation of a paint, and a compatible camouflage paste used to apply disruptive camouflage patterns on Großgerät, large equipment, of the German Army. RAL 6003 Olive Green was never used to designate a fabric colour, and it‘s interesting that Vallejo chose to include this colour in a uniform paint set.

Vallejo 70.964 “Field Blue” is an entirely fictional paint designation, of course. It‘s not immediately apparent, if Vallejo considers this colour to be the equivalent of Luftwaffe Blue, the dark blue-grey colour of the Fliegerbluse, Luftwaffe trousers and canvas equipment like the Cartridge Bandolier for Fallschirmjäger, or if this is meant to be RAL 7016 Fliegerblaugrau, the anthracite grey colour of painted Luftwaffe ground vehicles, and equipment like radios, steel helmets, scissor telescopes, gas mask canisters, drinking cups etc.

The decision to buy any narrowly themed paint set will depend on the number of useful colours included in it. Considering that most figure painters already own black and flesh tone, and that RAL 6003 Olive Green is not a Luftwaffe fabric colour, there are really only five supposed “Fallschirmjäger” colours in this set, which sells for 19 to 22 Euros, plus shipping. Purchased separately, five Vallejo Model Colours can be had for 13 Euros plus shipping. Of course, if you paint early war Fallschirmjäger wearing the Fallschirmjägerbluse M40, grünmeliert, you need even fewer colours.
