Zouaves.

Zouaves (Fr. Zouaves, Zouaoua), a tribe of Kabyle-speaking Berbers living in the Zouaoua (Zouavia) district of the Algerian Constantine Province in the mountains of the Djurdjura range. Known for their prowess in combat, they used to serve as mercenaries throughout the Maghreb. After the conquest of Algiers in 1830, the French administration retained these hired troops, mixed with Frenchmen, in order to bring about a rapprochement between victors and natives, but soon separated the locals and the French again in different companies. Officers and non-commissioned officers have since been mostly Frenchmen, the native element disappeared more and more from the Zouaves, which then became a French volunteer corps. In the early 20th Century there were four regiments of Zouaves, being expanded to nine «regiments de marche» in World-War One. In the Crimean War, the Zouaves earned their reputation as elite troops. They also fought in Italy, Mexico, The Franco-Prussian War, Morocco, Tunisia, Tonkin, World-War One, World-War Two, and the Algerian War, before being disbanded in 1962.
